What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

I'm thinking of sorting my new Japanese stamps (thanks again Frog and Bobby!) thematically instead of by Scott number. Page/section ideas include: Mt. Fuji, temples/shrines, fish, art, sports, festivals, war propaganda, nature (general), and emperors. Do y'all have any suggestions for more sections or advice on sorting thematically? Topical collections can be fun, and they can also drive you crazy as you get more and more (and MORE and more) topics that interest you. For an idea of how overarching this could become, have a look at the current list of checklists maintained by the American Topical Association. 14 pages, 3 columns per page! As a suggestion for Japanese stamps in particular, I would definitely add cartoon stamps, if you're looking at anything modern enough to be within the last 20 years. There are an endless amount of such stamps among Japan's modern releases (good for me, as I really like cartoon stamps). Hello Kitty, Snoopy, Miffy (I see Dick Bruna just passed away a couple of weeks ago), all kinds of anime, etc etc etc. The following examples are among my favourites, especially the last stamp - Doraemon (a robot cat from the future or some such thing) is lovesick! ha ha (image nabbed from a seller) And just because I mentioned Miffy, my favourite Dick Bruna drawing - Miffy is at the museum, admiring a Mondrian. Thanks Ryan, that is a good point. Perhaps I will use the Scott numbers for my album and have a few pages in the back with info on the different topics with some duplicate stamps. As for what I have been up to today, I did indeed find a few Japanese cartoon stamps and they are cute! I also learned that Magyar and Hungary are the same place, and looked at some German stamps with my mom. Overall, a good day! I will get some scans up tomorrow Sunday morning with my favourites.
Maybe I should start saying I will post scans the day after I actually intend to, because I somehow always manage to fall down a rabbit hole of other stuff to do on my way to the scanner. It is entirely the white rabbit's fault, I assure you.

Ok, here are my some of my favorite favorite stamps of the week. My mom remembered the two in the top left corner from her childhood. Long story short, her best friend's father was the mayor of the German version of the middle of nowheresville, and he let his daughter and my mom look through his business mail envelopes for stamps.

A nice selection If you are identifying them , stamp 3 & 4 may be harder to find
They are 1946, Feb. 16/ March 27. Charity issue for the aid of the welfare institutions of the city of Finsterwalde, Germany
Germany, Oct 1, 1905 Offices in China - has some value
Do you have any catalogs?

Thanks for the info about stamps #3 and 4! I was wondering about them, and my mom thought she might have seen the Finsterwalde one on letters from my great-aunt. She lived in that area around that time. Lots of stories. Also, the China one is very interesting because my little brother is actually learning Chinese. (I'm learning Japanese, he is learning Chinese. We have our own little war going on over which language is "cooler".) As for the catalogs, so funny you should ask! FirstFrog just sent me some, and they should be arriving tomorrow. If it weren't raining outside I would probably be setting up our old tent next to the mailbox... Anyway! Until the magic package arrives I have been sorting stamps by country, and I discovered these while doing that.

On a side note, in the catalog would Japan and Hungary be listed as such, or would they be listed as Nippon and Magyar? Also, why do I always get these burning questions that I simply must know the answer to exactly at the moment when I should be focusing on something else?

The catalog listings go by proper country name in English.Looking for CCCP would not find you Russia.I'll ship rest of catalogs when Mom replaces them, might be awhile yet,Sis usually is in charge of those.Mom has left her the W/W in her will so she's the one doing that. The U.S. stuff will become mine.I think it's revenge,I learned to hate those carmine Washingtons that had a zillion perfs and watermarks. One of the main reasons I started Canada.

For your awareness, the country names shown on our regional boards are the same as those listed in the Scott catalog. If you have questions about stamps of a specific country, it is best to list them on that country's board.

I've been busy lately trying to finish an article for our next newsletter but have still managed to acquire some interesting material that I've yet to touch -- a Civil War patriotic with letter to a soldier serving in an Ohio volunteer regiment, several Iwo Jima covers (but none needed for my Mellone collection) and a lot of about 100 different Italian stamps. This evening I won two unused ducks needed for my collection (RW3 and RW7) and a large lot of Ohio prepaid sales tax pairs (3000+). I hope I'm able to process it all prior to summer!

Ok, good to know. I will be popping in other countries boards in the near future!
I feel your pain Frog! At my infamous first stamp convention there was one seller with a stall full of complete albums. I found one stuffed front-to-back with carmine Washingtons. I showed it to my mom, and called it the "wallpaper album." I wish you could have seen the seller's face! This pristine album, which someone had spent countless years and hours on, had just been deemed as fit for wallpaper by a child. To add to the hilarity I actually fell in love with the album and, to the seller's surprise, bought it. I still have not mustered up the courage to actually sort through it though; I am just fine flipping through the pages and admiring the stamps that all look almost the same.

Edith,The U.S. specialist catalog I enclosed is dated but the information contained on the older issues doesn't change. It should help with those crazy Washingtons you have! I'll then know who to turn to when I'm faced with that challenge sorting Mom's stuff. Still waiting for you and Chris to show up at her house to sort out that cluster on her porch and the large cabinet in the dining room.In the meantime I'll plug away at this box.

Well, if travel were no object, I would be there. I am sure it would be a lot of fun to do and would bring a lot of satisfaction to complete.
Wish I had one of those Star Trek transporter rooms in my house. This would be the time to use it!

Firstly, I have finally caught my adorable kitty on film! He is so proud. Also, FirstFrog, your package came today! The box was a bit beaten up, but the catalogs seemed fine. Thank you again! My stamp shelf is starting to look very professional, don't you think?

I certainly agree that with the addition of the catalogues from First Frog, your stamp shelf is, indeed, starting to look very professional!
Frog, thanks so much for your kindness and generosity to Edith!

No thanks necessary from anyone,I was only going the right thing. It is very easy to share with friends,a lesson from preschool.I do feel bad I didn't have the other catalogs from the set though.Perhaps someone else here has some they could part with? Postage was relatively cheap using flat rate box.Weight wise it would have been triple.

If the small sample is indicative of the whole, you are going to have your hands full! Quite an eclectic mix from early classics to modern Middle East.

This afternoon I combined a packet of Czech pre-1960 stamps from my local club auction (meh) with two envelopes of the same from Bobby's awesome giveaway (amazing selection and quality!) Rough sorting is done and now it's time to catalogue and mount, while I watch Canada vs. Korea in the curling. Very fun evening!

So today's project is finally getting my Londonbus1 intro pages finalized. I will post scans later so you can see the results.LB1 your pages are looking like a good representation of your collecting interests.I am very proud to have you included in the pre-title page section of this collection. At the moment four people are represented on these pages. All I consider true friends of considerable influence on my mental well being when times were a bit rough.I thank each of my many friends for the support provided every day and the sharing of their time and thoughts. Another reason to spend some time at TSF!

So I noticed our friend Cindycan has a huge number of items for sale.I'm going to go through my pages and see if I'm missing anything he's offering. As they are filed by year it could turn into a lengthy project for the day. Many of my cindy sets are missing one or two to complete.I also brought back another 2 one gallon freezer bags full of Mom's porch hoard to be sorted and cataloged.
