First semi-postal air mail stamps issued in 1937. The surtax was to raise money for the "Patriotic Aviation Fund." The fund was earmarked to build airports across the nation. Stamps feature a DC-2 flying over the Japanese Alps. Scott: B1-B3

that is interesting. i never knew the reason for this issue, i have always liked that series and have the full set in my collection. thanks for sharing the background on them much appreciated.

Hi Darkomex thanks a lot, i joined that society a while ago but had to drop the membership to trim my expenses. thanks for reminding me of the source. I will keep an eye on it. was very much looking forward to that publication and the Journal they publish is VERY interesting as well.

I picked this item up at a stamp show last Spring. Looks like some dealer or perhaps an entrepreneur decided to use stamps to make a souvenir of the Russo-Japanese War. I'd like to date it if I can and maybe find the source. I assume that there are many more of these. I remember once seeing one on Ebay. Does anyone have any information on this philatelic souvenir? Based on the English language stamp on the back, it was probably prepared in Japan for tourists. But was that in the 20's and 30's or after WW2? If not, well, I guess I'll work my way through the twenty stamps and look for the most recent date of issue (smile). Not that that will date the sourvenir. BTW ... It's too big to scan or to easily fit into an album. So, I display it by folding it in half around an album page, like this:
