The last Showa-Era definitives.Stamps and booklet were issued April 1st,1988.
To add there remain two stamps for "electronic mail",issued Oct.1st 1984 and Aug.1st,1985.
My collection ends here. But I am considering to go on collecting later definitives. But definitives only !
Scott and Sakura have a silly numbering system with scores of subnumbers (a,b,c,d......), so that it becomes near impossible to know how many stamps were issued.
According to Michel,Japan issued from 1871 till the end of the Showa-Era (1988) 1821 stamps. From 1989 - 1998 797 stamps, from 1999 - 2008 2150 stamps and from 2009 - 2018 4760 stamps bringing the total to well over 10.000 today.
They are now at a rate of 5 - 600 new issues a year ! However there are remarkable few definitives among this deluge of new issues: less than 100 within 30 years.

Those Japanese “electronic mail” stamps salentin has scanned above (the two 500¥ ) have always puzzled me. I did a brief online search but didn’t get any relevant info. Does anyone know their purpose? Was it to provide an early form of electronic tracking perhaps?

Thank you! tomiseksj ! That info seemed to elude me and my curiosity really wanted to know. Hmmm, I wonder if any other National postal systems created anything similar. This must predate most fax machines.

Hello, Joan ( cursus)! Thanks for your post. I don't have a lot of experience in this area, but I am pretty sure that your stamps are revenue issues. I will look back in this thread, but I think that these have been posted before. Perhaps Dave ( Philatarium) can give us more details about these, and he may even have a catalogue. I don't know if Werner ( salentin) or Kim ( khj) or Ryan may also be able to help....

Any idea of what these might be? Thank you in advance (See earlier post for image.) Japanese tax revenues (shunyu inshi). The basic unwatermarked set is 1898-1909. The 1 rin through 5 sen revenue stamps were also issued watermarked 1915-1919. The leftmost stamp design exists in 4 denominations: 1,2,3,5r The design for the other 3 stamps exists in 5 denominations: 1,2,3,5,10s A third design exists in 3 denominations: 50s,1y,5y And finally, another design (portrait of Takenouchi no Sukune 武内宿禰) for the 10y. Total of 13 different denominations.

Note that for old revenue stamps, you can find a (simplified) listing of world wide stamps in the 1915 Forbin revenue stamps catalogue, which is available as a free download from the Internet Archive. There isn't nearly as much information there as you have already received from khj but still, I keep a copy because it's good to have a digital library for such stuff. Ryan

There is also a pretty good website that shows quite a few of the different Japanese revenue types here prepared by the Scandinavian Society for Japanese Philately (SSJP): eng.ssjp.dk/revenue/overviewrev.html

Not sure how long the English/revenue part of the website will be maintained. I would suggest that those interested should archive at least that portion of the website with pictures. The internet archives don't always archive all the pictures or go beyond 2-3 layers.

Thankyou to all.I've managed to identify some Japanese revenues on Forbin Catalog. I'll use it in the future if I run into some more "strange" japanese stamps.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I got out of alphabetic order today as I came across an envelope of several hundred stamps of Japan miss filed. I spent an hour or so going through the lot and only came across 1 regular stamp I needed or wanted. I did come across this group of tobacco tax/revenue stamps from the 1880's that I had not seen before. The condition is rather rough but so are almost all I see listed on eBay. I do not supposedly collect revenues but I guess these will join the page of other Japanese revenues I already have.

So the Revenue stamps are used on merchandise? such as tobacco products or whatever? i have seen them listed for sale by auction but was not sure what they were used for and if they still used today or if only olde times?
very interesting thread. Amazes me how diverse the topics and types of stamps there are.

This evening I was looking at my Japan stamps in my world wide album and decided to share these 2 highest values in the 1888-92 set. They are Scott 83 and 84. I am impressed that the Japanese had such a bright carmine ink in that era for the 1 yen. I do not recall any other country in that era that had achieved that brightness. The 50 sen stamp appears mint with original yellowed glue. The 1 yen appears to be mint to my eyes but sadly no glue. I expect like many high catalogue value stamps that there is a history of cancel removals. I can see no sign of a cancel on this one and really not important because I do not plan to sell or replace it.

this is an interesting corner of stamps for Japan. I think with all that I have to work on i will pass on adding this to my area of interest but this is very useful info and I will download several sources mentioned.
thanks again all..I still remain a bit in the dark as to what revenue stamps were used for.
