JAPAN, 1924, 10y Sakura 210 on Granite paper JAPAN, 1937, 10y Sakura 212 on White paper The stamps are cataloged as High Value Issues but designation can be misleading as to their CV
USED are not HIGH CV - in fact they are less than 1% of the mint shown above

Fukushima Stamp Exhibition sheet containing two 2 yen, rose carmine stamps depicting sampans on Japan's Inland Sea (Scott 411; May 23, 1948). This sheet can be distinguished from two others of similar design issued that same year by its blue border design of crossed lines and cherries.

I’m a Japan collector. 😉 You can still get decent recent Japanese kiloware - it is my go to cheap fun collection! But, the early material is pricy and the first 50 or so issues are wicked complicated!

Hi, Rene ( renden ): Nice to see a post on this thread after a long quiet period. I collect classic Japan, which I have enjoyed very much. I really became interested in collecting from there when I used to travel to Japan regularly for business. That regular business travel ended in 2016, although I did manage to visit there one more time in 2017. I have written about my visits to stamp dealers and the Philatelic Museum in Tokyo both in Forum posts and in the TSF Newsletter. I knew from previous posts that Terri ( philatelia ) collected modern Japan, but I had forgotten that Michael ( Londonbus1 ) had some of those nice Japan Offices in China overprints. I say "nice" because I like the look of the stamps with the overprints, not because I endorse the politics that led to those issues and the Offices in Korea! Although I have a decent classic Japan collection, I have not posted much on this thread, as others with the same stamps beat me to the punch. And on one of the few occasions when I thought I had a classic Japan stamp that no one else did, it turned out to be a forgery. Around that same time, this thread became a sore point for a couple of members, so I decided to turn my attention to other areas and just stay out of it. Rene, now that you are trying to rekindle a little interest in this area, I will oblige by posting a couple of images of classic Japan stamps from my collection: Japan, Sc 88, 5-sen deep ultramarine, depicting General Yoshihisa Kitashirakawa (1896) Japan - Offices in China, Sc 18, 1-yen carmine overprinted in black (1901-1906) Bottom line for me is that I like classic Japan very much, but as Terri points out, and I agree, the earliest issues are expensive and forgeries are plentiful. So, I have mainly worked on the classic issues that I can afford, and for the most part, I have tried to stay away from the forgery minefield, but as I mentioned previously, not always successfully....

Very nice Beryllium Guy, fun to talk Japan! I do collect a very basic one of each major variety (used) for classic Japan (and Japan before 1960) but there are MANY holes as I haven’t had much luck purchasing collections of this material. (my fav way to grow my collection). Regarding the very complex Dragons, I believe one of our members, Philatarium, is quite brilliant with those early issues. I know his work keeps him hopping, but he posts here once in a while time permitting.

Regarding the very complex Dragons, I believe one of our members, Philatarium , is quite brilliant with those early issues. I know his work keeps him hopping, but he posts here once in a while time permitting. Thanks for your comments, Terri! Yes, indeed, I know Dave ( Philatarium), having met him in person on more than one occasion, as he lives in southern California not too far from where my family still lives, and to where I periodically return. In fact, Dave has helped me to get some opinions on a few of my early Japan stamps, for which I am very grateful. I have been wanting to make some posts again about those stamps, but I have been holding off because the images I originally posted were not of the quality that the details were good enough to be able to discern the key details. Dave scanned my stamps at high resolution, actually, but the file sizes are so large that I cannot post them. And they are in TIF format, with which I am unfamiliar, and I have not been able to convert them into a format that I can modify to get the file sizes down. So, I still haven't posted anything yet, although I have some potentially exciting news when I finally figure out how to do it. We also have a member in Japan, Hironobu ( unechan), who was active for awhile, who also knows a bit about early issues, but he hasn't made any posts for many months. If you are interested, Terri, please PM me, as I have lots of classic Japan duplicates, and I would be happy to work out a deal to get you some material.
