Onto Austria then. These 2 images are from the 2 old albums. At the same time I also acquired a stock book which looks like a dealers stock with not a lot left in it but some of interest so I will include them on further posts. As usual I’d love any feedback and comments because I like to research them further. Graham

Graham
these appear to be all fairly common issues- the perforation may be the main 'plus" depending on what each is (and the early Austrian stamps have many different perfd... I've always wondered if they were experimenting, or there was no particular though when the perf/pin devices were made...)
top row middle- may well be a perf stamp trimmed to look imperf, or maybe an actual imperf, or I don't references in fromt of me, it may be from postal stationary
2nd row left 1 piaster (pistre) Turkish Post Office far right - Hermes- interesting cancellation, too bad the stamp is poorly cut
2nd page
nice group of what appear to be mint hinged, but also pretty common, I see some staining and a bent/short corner on a couple
Overall not a bad lot, but no early retirement here!
Cheers
Stan

also just noticed, 2nd row #2 left, looks like a Telegraph cancellation! (I see no town or city starting with TELEG... in fact not that many start with a T?!)

Hi Stan ( stainlessb) Thanks again for your observations and knowledge. I only have a basic world catalogue so I will have to have a search to see if that is likely to be an imperf stamp. I will pull it and have a look at the rear also. I did notice the telegraph postmark but don’t know it’s significance. Maybe they had a combined telegraph and post office that had that unique cancel. I have a couple more of the Hermes imperfs in the coming pages. Cheers Graham

Top left , nice color but cut close, can't tell exactly if bottom outer borderline is complete- 1 Kreutzer blue is nice!
bottom left..dang if only they'd left the top margin! (far right looks nice) Newspapers 2,3 & 4 , 2 left nice, #4 bottom 'trimmed" (also quite common, although some are so nice I suspect maybe reprints)
next scan SOLDI indicates - lower row left, not real clear, but Ottoman or Lombardy-Venetia - Lower row left not real clear, but likely early Austria (~1860's)
bottom scan left Austrin Right SOLDI
a nice start!

But no, ... these stamps are a little more familiar to me, that's all Stanley. I wear eyeglasses all day, .. and I read catalogs with a large magnifying glass ubiquitous on my desk....

I had to smile as I puzzled for a moment with the name “Francesco Giuseppe,”well of course he would be in the Italian provinces! more commonly known to many of us by his Austrian names Kaiser “Franz Josef” As stainlessb pointed out the blue stamp surcharged 1 piaster 1, was for use by the Austrian post office in the old Ottoman Empire and SG catalogues list it as “Austrian PO in the Levant “. Such was the lack of confidence in the Turkish post in the late 1800s that many European nations had their own offices in Beirut Jerusalem Constantinople etc. Eg Britain, France, Austria, Italy, Germany, Russia even Romania had offices. the Postmark PADOVA. The English know as PADUA

Austrian post offices in the east 1888 1 plastra on 10k. light blue. My Unified Catalog values it 5.00euro if perf. 13 and 1/2 1000euro. You don't have bad material, it just needs to be studied.

The perforations of this type of stamps must be carefully checked and whether they belong to Type I or Type II, the catalog values can vary greatly.

Stamps for newspapers, mercury head 1867. If my tired eyes do not deceive me, your copy belongs to type II, my Unified Catalog 2019-2020 values it at 50.00euro. I think you have acquired a good material, which could give you some satisfactions as well as a good philatelic study and a lot of fun. Enjoy me a lot !!

These belong to type I. the used one is valued 30.00euro the new 90.00euro hinged. I hope dear Graham that this is the input to acquire books and catalogs from all the philately in the world, enjoying this wonderful hobby beyond the market value of the stamp. For me personally, philately relaxes me a lot and is good for my health.

What I am doing with this thread really is giving people the opportunity to discover gems with me rather than me looking them all up as it gives me a lot of enjoyment learning about them from other people who are knowledgeable in the different countries. I have a full set of 2012 Stanley gibbons catalogue of the world which gives me an idea which ones are worth investigating but as you say it’s well worth getting specialised catalogues for the countries you collect. As I seem to have a lot of Austrian stamps it may be worth my while getting a more specialised catalogue. I mainly collect GB and have all the specialised catalogues. I have started to accumulate a lot of German stamps and USA so I may have to ask Father Christmas for some catalogues. Regards Graham

Further to the post by rex I decided to have a look at stamp catalogues. What a minefield that is! Stanley Gibbons do a reasonably priced range of country specific catalogues although they seem to contain more that one country and there’s no illustrations to see what you’re getting before you buy. I’m wondering if they are specialised enough for my needs. Then there’s the Michel catalogues which look very nice but not in English. In short I am a bit undecided as to what to look for

The best thing would be to take the specialized catalogs in the language of the country, .. German area the Michel, French area Yvert & Tellier, Italian area Sassone etc .. etc .., obviously this requires a translation effort and an economic effort. I still believe that the Stanley Gibbons are great catalogs with the advantage of the English language but they are still as expensive as the others. A good second hand could be a solution, however the more specialized the catalogs the greater the fun, at least for me.

Then there’s the Michel catalogues which look very nice but not in English. In short I am a bit undecided as to what to look for The google translator is a great tool and you'll be amazed how quickly you start to pick up the language and suddenly the pages are full of invaluable information. The used catalogues are quite affordable and as your stamps are all earlier issues quite adequate* (and often the shipping is as much or more than the cata;ogue itself). E-Bay is good, as is Amazon, and if you have patirnce to scroll through lots of catalogues bibliobooks.com is great! * the newer editions may have updated information pertinent to the earlier issues, but much of that can be gleaned elsewhere
