rex these intrigue me as well- I thought they might be early revenue/tax stamps, as the earliest issues do not give a lot of clues as to country of origin, by I have the most recent Barefoot revenue for Austria (and Hungary...though the crown typically has a cross leaning fet atop it) and nothing like this that I find, nor do i see anything in Michel specialized... The horn opens other possibilities, so it may not be of Austrian origin at all (would not be the first time I have seen misplaced stamps) I hope someone knows!

These also intrigue me a lot. These are Hungarian newspaper stamps. St Stephens Crown with Posthorn turned to the right, imperforate. So, SG N14 1872 1krajczar red. £8.50 mint, £1.25 used.

Thank you daniel ! I do not have a specialized for Hungary, only the fiscals... the laters crowns have the slanted cross, is there a signifigance to before/after?

I'm away from home I can't check, I think the overprint is in Yugoslavian and that it's a tax overprint, it intrigues me. The Serbian Cyrillic overprint reads Kraljevsto SHS. It is listed in Stanley Gibbons under Yugoslavia: Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS): Issues for Bosnia and Herzegovina SG 36 1919, types of Bosnia overprinted, part of a long set, 45 heller on 80 heller brown, minimal value but a nice piece of history.

Stanley, the cross was originally upright but was damaged in the 17th Century but left that way. Actually, the stamp does depict the crooked cross, see this enlarged image:

Thanks again to rex daniel and stainlessb It’s great to find out about these stamps. I had no clue about the overprint but I did have an idea that the horns were Hungary. Great bit of investigative work

I don't know if the stamp is Turkish I'm away from home, but the one on the right is an Arabic number.

Two maybes above…..so Lest there is still doubt , I give a “for sure “it is TURKEY . The complex central tughra or personal signature of the Sultan is the defining identification feature.
1909 series .. SCott number 153. The 20 para value , also listed in SG 263 with three different perf combinations , but all have minimal 10p CV.
of the Ceylon the 48c rose SG 130 is pretty. cat £9.50 and it is a pity the 96 c drab grey is damaged. SG132 Cat £30 otherwise in decent condition.

In case you wonder about some of the Ceylon which have pen dates and / or oval violet handstamps in addition to a regular Post Office cancel, these are security measures from commercial companies to prevent low paid employees from stealing the stamps on the way to the post office and selling them unused in the bazaar!
Just like company perfins in US Canada , Europe, GB, HongKong etc etc

Thanks vikingeck for the info. There’s a few stamps in there that have turned up on the wrong pages and I did think it was Turkish. As per most of the stamps in this album it seems like the Ceylon ones need to come off and have a soak. That’s very interesting re the markings. I did wonder about the double postmark and the hand written date on those 2. This album continues to educate me. Regards Graham

The actual Chinese stamps on this page are two fairly common Sun Yat Sen definitives and an airmail stamp. I can identify Scott or Ma catalog numbers at some point later this evening. One interesting thing is that the 25 yuan (I think that was the currency but don't quote me on it until I look it up) Sun Yat Sen blue apparently came from the same envelope as the airmail stamp. The postmarks are exactly the same.

Sorry you are disappointed at the lack of response , so a couple of comments at least :
Once again, like the earlier Ceylon , you have some cancels with additional company security handstamps against pilfering.
Note that the earlier India stamps are inscribed EAST INDIA , until the creation of the concept of the Indian Empire with Victoria, Queen Empress.
The 1 Rupee revenue stamp is handsome .

Sorry for the lack of response from me, too. I have been enjoying your posts nonetheless, Graham ( radiocruncher). I also agree with Alex’s ( vikingeck) comments: I also really like the 1-Rupee QV revenue stamp. I also agree that you have some very nice early India in the lot, but I would suggest that you consider giving them a soak, as I can see adherent paper and bent corners. The press-flattening after soaking will be helpful, I would imagine. Anyway, still certainly enjoying the thread!

The thread for me is extremely interesting and browsing the albums with the forum even more interesting. Unfortunately I'm not always at home and I can't check my books, but I think you are posting interesting material anyway. Please don't stop posting even if you don't have immediate answers.

Thanks vikingeck Beryllium Guy and rex for your comments and encouragement. Any comments left about the stamps and their history are very interesting and help me and others lear as well as sending us off into the depths of the internet and reference books to investigate and discover more about them so please keep them coming even if to you think they may seem obvious as I still consider myself a beginner. The Indian stamps certainly need a bit of tidying and I will get the worse ones off for a soaking and a straighten soon. It’s great that there are so many stamps in here dating back to the 1800’s when stamps were in their infancy. The only pages left in the Asia section are from Japan and Persia although I think someone many have got Iran and Iraq mixed up. Here they are.

The first Stamp the Japanese Empire blue Ten sen (SG JP 86) is part of the Old Koban series a series of 13 stamps (1876-79),just noticed for the first time the four horse-shoes and what I think is a fishing rod in each corner on the inner frame. Its also got a interesting cancel called a 'bota'. I am just learning about them and have collected a few,the cancel looks like the large 'bota' it was usually used with a double circular stamp on the letter or card which states where and when it was posted. Hopefully somebody else may know more.

radiocruncher, I totally missed your Hong Kong and India post. On September 18 I had a 12+ hour day at work handling, coincidentally, an Indian wedding. Also, my days since then have been one large event after another so I have been on the forum on a limited basis until yesterday. That large rectangular 1R revenue stamp is quite exciting. It must have been embossed on a document at some point.
