Last week I completed a trade with a very nice man in Michigan from our 'sister' forum, SCF. Acquired a number of Canadian items, but these are the ones I'll hilite. I've been toying with the question of whether to continue collecting mint stamps or not. My main collections are Canada and the US, used and mint. And I'm finding the older mint items harder to find and expensive. And I like gum! Despite what some have said about it, and how 'you don't collect the back of the stamp', there's something very appealing to me of a post office fresh stamp that's over 100 years old! So I've resigned myself to collect (or attempt to, anyway) only MNH. That means I'll have to upgrade a lot of my mint collections, but it will be a challenge.

$2 with free shipping Another MX to add to the pile waiting to be identified. Most Post Offices used a Maltese Cross of standard design. You probably need to work from there. Looking at distinctive differences Discount Ireland due to the straight sides of the outer cross Look first at London 1 and London 2 ....nope Nothing else fits with England and Wales Scotland 3 is close , as is Perth and maybe Greenock I'd start with Scotland 3 as the closest, looking through Amateur's eyes.

Some more stuff arrived today. This is one of a collection of the 1915-23 KGV excise stamps, similar to the Canadian War Tax Revenues. The collection also includes several surcharges/overprints. This one in particular is interesting because it has a flag precancel, same sort of per cancel found on some of those war tax stamps. [BROKEN IMAGE LINK(S) REMOVED]

amazing engraving! Has anyone ever read anything about the engravers from this era? I wonder if any of them are known by name, like Slania.

The last printed version of Mr van Dam's catalogue (2009) lists it at $50 ($350 for the inverted). Guess its almost time for a new edition. The flag cancel only appears on the 6¢ war tax version of this stamp and catalogues (2009) at $450 (inverted $650).

It has been quite a while since I posted on this forum. Life has a way of pushing you in directions you do not necessarily want. in May I put my collections away because my daughter and granddaughter moved in with us, and I could just see the 1 1/2 year old having fun with all those 'stickers'. Now that they have moved into their own place, I am starting to pay attention to my stamps once again. Just before all this happened I had decided to upgrade my US 1902-1903 regular issues and would like to show what I have, so far. This one has a Bill Weiss certificate. that $5 Marshall may be a ways away! regards, Theron.

There may be some info in the newsletters from the Dead Letter Office Study Group of BNAPS. Here's a cover nabbed from one of the issues, showing the reason why used DLO stamps get a crease in the middle. Judging from the backstamps, it obviously made it into the US before being returned to Canada and having the dead letter seals affixed. So, was it opened in the US before returning to Canada? There aren't any US DLO seals showing, but part of the cover is missing from the scan. For my own mint never hinged collection, I'm missing OX2 - it's pretty expensive and tough to find in MNH condition. OX3 looks the same but it's missing the blue paper, and it's only about 20% the price! OX1 (1870s sometime, can't remember when) is not unknown MNH but it's so uncommon (everything is regummed) that it's one of the oldies I'm willing to tolerate MNG (same with most Large Queens - older than that and I mostly give up on the mint idea, too). One more, a 100 page article on Canadian DLO usage. (No examples of a DLO seal, though.) Ryan

Here is my latest pick-ups. A cover from 1961 to a miss Lizzie Wood. Fancy star cork killer and old stye dial that I really fancy. I know that there is probably more than the "official count" but it should be noted that I own 5 of the 9 known. and this old "MICK" R.P.P.C. hometown card- "Black-face minstrel band" dressed up for the Neptune Fire company parade on independence day 1907.

I got this recently as a gift- there are 6 more of those little tabs folded under (YIKES I know..) but to gt it into an archival sleeve plus it already had two three vertical bi-folds it didn't do any harm...lol Still cool and fits great into my tobacco related collection no? -Jeff

Here is a new Gibraltar 5-shilling George V. Gibbons and Lowe both say that there is only one color option for this value tablet...black ink. Awfully close to a very dark olive-gray, to my eye: This is one of my favorite KGV stamp designs. Okay, top ten. Top fifty, for sure. Oh, who am I kidding? I like them all.

North Borneo SG49, the five-dollar stamps from 1889. This is a big stamp, having the same proportional scan settings as the Gibraltar 5-shilling, above, which is already a larger-than-normal stamp. I think we can be almost 100% certain that the barred obliterator on this example is for remainders. Gibbons says that they can sometimes be postal cancels, but absent specialized knowledge you have to subscribe to the philatelic principle that the more-common option is the most likely answer. Still, it is a very light strike, and leaves a very attractive stamp relatively unscathed.

A five-pence Niger Coast from 1894 (SG55). This set, engraved by Waterlow, has a variety of frames, and this one is one of my favorites. Gibbons lists these in purple or deep violet (55a). Not a significant difference in CV. There is a little remnant that needs some attention, but it didn't want to let go with a bit of gentle prodding, so more work will be needed.

Wow! so much eye candy from the cjd. Those "remnants" can take a perf tooth with them. Be vigilant and gentle. These challenge one's patience. Great scans. What is the "line" on the dexter side of the North Borneo? Crease?

The fact that it extends across the margins probably means you won't buy the "plate crack" excuse, so I'll have to admit that it is the mylar pocket. That stamp is a monster, and I didn't have a five-pocket Vario close at hand that had an empty space.

The only stamp in the set not perfed 14

I know this basic design comes inscribed British North Borneo and State of North Borneo. Beyond that, I have not done any checking. This is not a stamp I would typically seek out, but it tagged along with the Niger Coast and Gibraltar examples above, so I won't turn it away.

Thank you very much. I know that the centering isn't great and the perfs are a bit ragged but it'll still fit right in my Washington/Franklin collection. I like filling spaces on a budget and like most of you I'm not in it for the money just the satisfaction of chasing it down. For me that's the thrill -the chase! This one sort of found me though. I'm pleased with it. I only need the orange & black $2.00 (Scott #523); I have a damaged #524 that I will replace eventually though.
