Also included in this lot is an almost complete collection of cut (mutilated) squares. While these have little CV it adds a nice touch to BOB stuff.

If nothing else I made a good dent in third series of bill stamps, including the two watermarks.I haven't yet totaled the CV of this lot but believe I added $1000 to BOB.

The latest addition is this Victoria 5-shilling, which I think might be the December, 1901 scarlet and deep blue: Thoughts on the color? Anyone think the blue is not strong enough to be deep blue?

What I collect: Primarily focused on Japan, but lots of other material catches my eye as well ...

Whatever shade the blue is, it's a gorgeous stamp!
Victoria certainly had some striking stamp designs.

Cant show anything right now, but the missus and I are in Vancouver on a holiday/family get together, and she put me onto a man who was selling his collection. This from a woman who rolls her eyes whenever I mention perforated pieces of paper. Spent a lovely hour yesterday with him and his wife and came away with 5 stockbooks full of all sorts of world wide material. Once I get home next week, there will be lots of sorting, scanning and I dare, say a few auctions and giveaways. Love bringing home souvenirs! Edit- Took the red-eye home from Vancouver last night/this morning. The missus and I are a little bleary eyed, but the daughters and dog were happy to see us. Here are the stamp currency I mentioned earlier this week. Kind of neat. I could only find these three issues on the inter web. The back images are extras. The one on the lower left is another Czar Nick, but a different shade of blue. [BROKEN IMAGE LINK(S) REMOVED]

I just went and bought another one...*SIGH* Man these are addictive!! Anyway... This is from near my Hometown of Jersey Shore PA.
Williamsport PA. Stampless/folded letter. 1851 is notated (on the front left bottom) in graphite pencil.
Fabulous Jeff! The shopping list is fascinating, 5 Quart flat bottomed tea kettle He/she works in fractions of dozens, eg 1/4 doz straw cutters but then, when ordering the German/Yirman ? Chisel Handles, works in 1/4 Gross, (36) Frying Pans were a hot item

I know it right?! I was absolutely fascinated by it the moment I seen that item! It's kind of in rough shape but it's for my hometown collection and the idea is t preserve this stuff and not let it get into the hands of someone that cannot appreciate the historical significance of an item like this. for 12.00 I wasn't going to let that get away! Thank you for the compliment Rod!

Thank you for the compliment Rod! I think you can pretty well rely on, at $12 that cover would go, if not to your good self, to someone with appropriate knowledge and care. That's comforting. What I don't understand, presumably, it is going to PA, to source goods and vittles, from some store in Williamstown called Catell & Co. We have a PAID strike, but how much was it ?, and how did they handle the accounting ? How was the integrity of the Postmaster kept in check? Ooops, just saw the 3c mark. sorry.

Williamsport PA. I believe not Williamstown PA. unless, of course I misread it (as I really just skimmed over it). It looks to have been prepaid right in Williamsport as the same ink was used on the PAID strike. On another note it would simply mean more to me as being from these ares than to say an ordinary "run-of-the-mill" stampless collector w/o regard to the town's cancellation is all I was meaning. I'm sure it would've been in good hands otherwise but I am passionate about collecting historical documentation/philately of and from my little part of the planet.

Beauty covers Jeff! Nicely played.
Going through my acquisition here in Vancouver, I found 5 Russian stamps printed on heavy card with inscription on the back. No scanning facilities here, but on a hunch I went to google and sure enough they turn out to be 1915 WWI stamp currency. Same designs as Czar Nick stamp (and two other gents) but used as money.
I think I've been here before....

Here is my most recent purchase. I got it on the cheap so nothing to really brag about. ha-ha. It will however fill a gap in my Great White fleet Post Card collection.

One of the last pieces I needed for my war tax exhibit. A Canada Admiral #139 provisional stamp. In 1926 the Canadian government cancelled the tax (temporarily) and needed some 2¢ stamps fast, so they had the 3¢ stamp surcharged. This first was unacceptable and a second, provisional stamp SC#140 was created. Sheets of the first provisional were destroyed, but 500 (sheets) were saved for philatelic sale. Some did make it into postal use. Was lucky to find this one at a reasonable price. Sellers image. [BROKEN IMAGE LINK(S) REMOVED] The original is on it's way home from California.

Although covers have never been of great interest to me, recently I've picked up several that might be of interest to other Forum members. I'll be posting them on different threads over the next few days. Since we as yet have no thread for Tibet, I chose to post this cover in the general new acquisitions thread. The cover, dated 29 August 1904 and the accompanying letter are inscribed by the hand of Herbert J Walton, a medical officer with the Younghusband Military Expedition that "opened" Tibet. He comments about the misspelling of Lhasa (Lahssa) by the India post office. The cover has also a relevant Base Office backstamp, 9 Sept. 1904. I wish dealers/collectors had not marked initials and redundant information on it. Some say that's acceptable. I think not.

That will be highly prized by a dedicated collector of the area. I'll have to dig up my Tibet in exile stamps, and make a thread, so we can link to this gem. A fairly common occurence when anglicisation of foreign names. Tibet was once referred to as Thibet, so I can understand the Lahssa conversion. Any idea of what "RWO" means? I assumed RWO was someone's initials, someone who thought the cover would be improved if they left their mark.

I assumed RWO was someone's initials, someone who thought the cover would be improved if they left their mark. I see. My opinion is that is part of the original cover. RWO using Acronym finder is Retired / Regional Warrant Officer, but that doesn't fit Askphil has no answers either. H S King were Lawyers / Solicitors as far as I can see. The pencilled marks are large and ugly, I thought that was what you were referring to. As you, the cover is best left as is. A great item.

I had located H S King as a law firm. And there is a E G Webster, MP, who was connected with the Colonial Institute who might be the addressee, but the research I've done is less than convincing about that. The accompanying letter, sadly, is no help because it's not the one to Webster, but rather to a Mr. Fagan to whom Walton is transmitting the cover for his stamp collection. I'll post the letter when I get a chance. The letter is dated 29 October 1905, presumably after Walton had returned to London. Of the spelling of Lhasa, Walton writes, "The Indian Post Office for some unknown reason struck out in an entirely original line in the spelling of 'Lhasa.' As far as I know, there is no justification at all for this ragary." The letter goes on to comment about the "presentation of the Tibetan collection to the museum." You may be right about the RWO initials. I had not previously considered them a part of the original cover, but they may be.

Herbert James Walton co-authored with Perceval Landon a book titled 'The Opening of Tibet." I'll see if our local library has a copy. I currently have only a photocopy of a few pages.

In May 2011, I started collecting cacheted first day covers for the Iwo Jima stamp (Scott 929) that are listed in Mellones. This weekend, I won the below cover -- the designer is unknown. In over 3 years of near-daily looking, this was the first time I had seen a cover with this cachet offered at auction. I won it at the opening bid but was prepared to pay far more than that to add it to my collection. I still have a long way to go and may never complete the task -- I've only seen one of those missing covers offered at auction and I lost it by a large margin.

I should have written "Mellone's." Michael A. Mellone compiled and edited a series of catalogs listing first day cover cachets of United States stamps.
