I'm still learning about the Swiss practice of printing stamps on paper with the gum in a matrix of small dots (or is the gum surrounding the small dots?). In any case, they're difficult for me to see, even with a loop. Sometimes Scott list the ordinary (smooth) gum stamps with main numbers, sometimes not, sometimes the grilled gum stamps get the main numbers. Sometimes they don't say whether the gum is ordinary or grilled, as for example on some in the range of numbers 2o1 to 2o30. I suppose my having this problem shows I'm an amateur with these stamps, but it is taking me a while to sort it all out.

I see, I like the "amateur" stage of a collection One learns so much, that is the enjoyment. Perhaps consider the German "Spargummi" it may be similar Bud, to save as economy during wartime PS: Spargummi is especially easy to see on stamps of Thuringa

A Wikipedia article on the postal history of Switzerland claims "In about 1930 Switzerland began to use "grilled gum", a light grill applied along the gum to counteract the tendency for gummed stamps to curl. The grill is most obvious on mint stamps, but is faintly visible on used stamps as well. This was abandoned around 1944." The grilling is much finer than the Spargummi.
I find it hard to see on mint stamps, and virtually impossible on used that have been soaked.

A couple more pages for League of Nations album I’m designing, part of the collection I recently purchased. Suggestions? Comments? There must be a proper name for the sheet in the second frame. Anyone know what it is?

Anyone know what it is? A very interesting question Bud, hopefully Postmaster can chime in, often seen with German and French emmissions. I think "propaganda" is too strong a word, perhaps an "advertising sheet" or "souvenir sheet" or "first day emmission sheet/cover" with favour cancels, but I am sure there must be a better phrase. Fabulous work so far. I find the iconography in the postcard image striking, the young lass with palm frond, a sign of peace, and victory of spirit over the flesh, in close harmony of the power of the Lion. Superb.

I plan to include in the album I'm making pages for countries where the League had a direct impact on their philatelic output, such as Upper Silesia.

I also picked up this cover dated December 26, 1913, local rate in La Cananea (A small mining town at the headwaters of the Sonora River). The addressee, James Cohn was a mining reporter for the Bisbee Daily Review (accross the border in Bisbee, AZ).

WWII Patriotic Postal Card - With "Buy War Bonds" slogan meter. Reverse is advertisement for stamp dealer Frederick Dietz. Note "P" and "O" on sides of town mark indicating an impression made with a meter machine owned by a post office.

If its not too much of a pain the next time you have your scanner going, could you post a scan the same size of the other side of the card please. Rick

Has anyone noticed that this listing is listed as mint? There is clearly a cancellation on it on the left of center.

Thank you very much Smauggie, now I just have to figure out how to print that out so that it looks presentable and I will be adding it to my collection. Makes me wanna cry a little to know that at one time I could have bought 50 of his "Poster Sheets" for $2.00 and now on a good day that doesn't even buy you one.
Appreciate you scanning the back for me.

Oh wow, love that OX1 Officially Sealed / Dead Letter Office stamp! I can't even see the centre crease that results from folding the stamp over the edge of the envelope, it must be a minor fold that hasn't caused too much damage.

The little blue button in center of second picture is some sort of ration token.Inscribed canada ration meat.Am sure someone here knows more. There are a couple damaged items but still very nice lot.I will be grouping some doubles together for distribution to those interested.Give me couple days to sort through. The extras and larger pieces will be set aside for our friend JamesW if all agree that seems right.

There are no precancels listed in my 2009 Van Dam catalogue that look like that - for that matter, there aren't any blue precancels listed for any of the War Tax revenues. The railway ties precancels have clean, distinct prints, in black, with separated vertical lines (two different styles, one of them has single horizontal lines above and below the verticals), and those are only on the 8 cent and 25 cent values - see image, nabbed from an auction website. For the 1 cent sheet stamps, the only precancels listed are the heavy red "X" (upright and inverted), "DIV. 17" and a horizontal line of small separated black squares. There's also a 1 cent coil stamp of the same design, and it has only a "DIV 17" overprint listed. It's not a detailed enough scan to say for certain, but I think your stamp just shows a cancellation with a wax pencil or lithographic crayon, similar to the 50 cent KEVIII block you show above. Ryan

I definitely don't know what I'm talking about (not the first time, and certainly not the last), but, without knowing the context of Canadian revenues, this looks to me like a roller cancel. Were revenue precancels done as roller cancels? Or could this is a regular (post-)cancel?

I would second Ryan's suggestion, it is a wax crayon cancellation. I have the 1 cent War Tax "Div 17" precancel, that was ordered by the British Matchmaker MaGuire Paterson and Palmer 1919

I have a couple of the big red X's the four cent is a nice one. After looking at hundreds of these it still stands out as "different' than the rest I'll hang onto it.Learning what I can from Van Dam sales site believe I have a couple goodies.

I magnified the image and it's definitely a machine applied thing too uniform to be anything but.The texturing leaves me puzzled.I also found a Company pre-cancel which I'm quite sure is a much rarer find. When I get some of these mounted in the right places I'll show you my excise/war tax issues.

Dave, if this had a regular post cancel that would also be a bit better,Under magnification I seem to detect a T and a 7 very small in the cancel not real sure what it is.Could be something or nothing at all.maybe one day someone will know til then it will be mounted in showgard and in my care.
