The 1912 Exhibition seems to be following me around !! I recently came across a post from an eBayer on a Facebook Stamp group talking about some items he was listing. One thing led to another and I had the chance to bid on some nice and rarely seen items from the 1912 International Stamp Exhibition !! Needless to say bidding was brisk and I was outbid on some items of interest. But I did win my first and fourth choices !! One of the ones that got away was a signed letter from Fred Melville (Junior, now National Philatelic Society) to George Bernard Shaw asking for opinions about the Ideal stamp which was the winning design for their Society competition. The items here are most likely proofs for the image reproduced on the cover of the Official Exhibition catalogue. You will note that the value has changed from 1d (Ideal Stamp) to 6d which was the basic price for the catalogue. There was a more de-luxe version too that cost 1/- and that value appeared on the image. These latter items may also be up for sale in the near future, who knows. Here are 3 of the 10 proofs in that winning lot together with a Press Photograph of a 1d Black ideal Stamp. More tomorrow ! Londonbus1

Adding to what I touched upon in my previous post about finding some cheaper JNF labels, I had an amazing experience last Friday evening ! A few days previously I had bid on 25 items that I found starting at 99c. I almost never see a Judaica/JNF label starting at 99c.......it almost never happens. Some of these lots were in sets or blocks and included some varieties which one rarely sees. I was the only bidder on them all and won the lot !!!!!!!!!!!!! 99CENTS each lot !!! But why ? Most times there are a number of bidders and I can say I do not recall ever winning a like item for the opening bid. Amazing. Maybe the seller lost out because all of Israel and the Jewish world were celebrating the New Year ? Maybe. Anyway they should arrive tomorrow. In the meantime here is a part set of JNF/KKL labels issued in 1949 to mark the election of Chaim Weizmann as the first President of the State of Israel. These also exist overprinted '25 Prutot' in black. Londonbus1

A 1942 Fund-Raising label for the British Red Cross and Order of St.John of Jerusalem. Missing the Red cross top left corner. Exists also perforated. These were produced by an Army Corps Field Survey Company in sheets of 25 (5x5) with margins all round. I have long had a soft spot for this label. Looks much more classy with the Red Cross........I don't have a copy ! Similar label may have been produced during or after World War I. More to come........

I never knew how popular these were until this evening. Now I know why I was outbid on most of the others !! Duckworth & Co (Essences) Limited have been trading as Cargill Flavour Systems (UK) Limited since 2006 but still have a working factory in Old Trafford, Manchester in North-West England. The Food Flavouring & Essence Company have been making Sodas and their own labels since the early part of the 20th Century. More thirst-quenching labels can be seen here until I pluck up the courage to bid higher !! www.google.co.il/search?source=univ&tbm=isch&q=Duckworth+%26Co+Essences+Limited,+manchester&safe=strict&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjl1NCTv_3rAhWuRxUIHYSBCDsQjJkEegQIChAB&biw=1098&bih=475 ( I was going to put these in the Oranges thread posted by JeffS but didn't want to add lemons and limes to the cocktail. Maybe he would consider changing the title ?)

.....continuing with the 1912 Exhibition, but by accident, I have just won these beauties. Not seen around too often and definitely not at the good price I found. And there might be more......watch this space ! These are all postcards, printed in limited quantities and most are not in the colours of the printed stamps. How I would have loved to have been at this event !

This one is for anyone celebrating the Jewish New Year which begins tonight. I have been busy in the Kitchen cooking the meal for all our family in quarantine.........a "Quarantine Supper" we have named it !! As the only non-Jew sitting around the table, I think I have done rather well !! Gefiltre Fish Roast Chicken Spinach and Cheese Bake Rice Minted Peas & Carrots Ratatouille Selection of Salads Apple, Raspberry and Blueberry Pie with honey Ice Cream I had to beg for food deliveries from those able, it wasn't easy. The label is one of a long series issued by the JNF specifically for the Jewish New Year. I have chosen this one as it's the year of my birth !! A happy event, no ? I'll contact my friend in Tel Aviv after cooking and cleaning. Will get more details if any are to be had. I believe the little bottle had a dripper attached to the cap and we used 6 or 7 drops. I will get exact details later. Londonbus1

I was given a demonstration by a fellow collector who came to exchange stamps earlier in the summer.
This is what we used and it worked superbly, no after effects (he showed me items he did a year ago).
1. a few drops of Kalium Permanganate in water. 2. Soak stamp for 30 seconds, the stamp will go an 'icky' brown. 3. Take out with tongs (old ones) and put into Lemon juice. When stamp is clean... 4. Put in fresh water to rinse. 5. Dry a little and press.
Perfect every time.

Hi hijabihomegirl I don't have a Scott catalogue handy but the SG# is 44 issue 1858-79. Number on reverse is the plate number which you will find on the side of the stamp. A nice Duplex cancel for Ipswich, very well centered. Shame about the missing corner but a keeper. Londonbus1

1912 International Stamp Exhibition. In previous posts we have seen blocks and part sheets and read about this Exhibition and it's souvenirs (we have haven't we ?) ! Over the years I have, against my wallet's better judgement, accrued a small amount of the many colours that were printed. But there are lots more out there and the search goes on. My wallet will just have to bear it !! Here are some additions to those already seen. Someone has tried to mutilate the two items below by changing the value. A pointless task achieving nothing except the destruction of a very hard-to-find Ochre-Brown variety. Shame on them ! The labels below are a very sad bunch. Someone has tried to perforate some imperforate stamps and failed miserably. The fact that they did it on the scarce Brown colour is all the more heartbreaking. But here they sit as a reminder of some terrible vandalism we can find in our hobby !! The Black/grey strip is a poor reproduction, badly printed too. Londonbus1

1948 Abraham's Tamarisk issue.......Variety ! This issue commemorates the planting of Tamarisk Trees at a location near Beersheva in the Negev at the place where Abraham also planted them. (Genesis 21:33) The Green label (without value) at left was printed using 2 shades of green. The pair on the right are missing the darker shade and hence the upper inscriptions which are solid, although an outline can be seen. This was mistakenly listed as "Part of design missing" which could also be said to be correct ! Having spent a few years with little addition to the JNF/KKL collection (because of huge increases in price and value) I have at last found a few sources where items are more reasonably priced. In these days of closure, getting closer to those sources is proving difficult so patience is required.....I guess we are all in the same boat !

Here's how Lundy may have commemorated the Philatelic War Fund of 1916. I wonder if a few of those Puffins were auctioned off ?? Far below the Puffins is an example of the unissued War Fund label by Perkins Bacon (just for comparison!). The design was reproduced on the front cover of two auction catalogues of that year also produced by Perkins Bacon. The labels, on thin card, are all signed on the reverse by Gerald King. Londonbus1

Couldn't quite decide where to place this one. Block of Control stamps from 'The Philatelic Society' ? I have not been able to find much out up to now. Looks like a J.W. Scott sales department item. Anyone ? (To save me pulling my hair out later)

The proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948 opened up a huge number of offices for donations, volunteering and assistance in all number of works. The Jewish National Fund (JNF) or Keren Kayemet L'Israel (KKL), who had been in existence since 1901, were at the forefront of this. In 1948 they set up a voluntary fund to assist in the establishment of a 'modern' wireless service and they issued stamps under their banner as a means of raising funds. Shown below is a group of 'Radio Stamps' from 1948-52 and 1956. It is not a complete set. They were used to collect a voluntary tax on radio sets ! The Hebrew year is written in smaller letters in the white box near the bottom. They were printed in blocks of 4 with selvedge on one side which was then stapled. The designer was P.Putterman and they were printed at the Institute of Graphic Works and HaShaked in Tel Aviv. Perf 8½. It is stated in Rochlin that 'the perforation knives were locked in with the type so the Stamps were always perfectly centered'. The last Radio Stamps were issued in 1956.

The Webster Philatelic Association issued 3 Souvenir sheets for their 2nd Annual Exhibition & Bourse on April 26th, 1941. The sheet shows the central figure of an Indian with a bow and arrow. The name of the nearby Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaug is inscribed in the surrounding circle. (no, I cannot pronounce that name !!). The Fields Picklo list tells me that this was the only event in Webster that issued Souvenirs. With names as long as that of the lake, I am not surprised !!
