OK, got 2 1940 albums and a 1932 album last week. All have the spaces for the flag stamps in them. Just thought I would add. One of the 1940 albums is basically brand new. It has less than 15 US stamps ever mounted in the entire album, still don't need it, but I have it. LOL.

I wonder if any of our members watched this fight live in 1971 ?? I remember my Dad getting me and my brother to sit down and watch the fight. He said it would be "the greatest fight" of all time. It was the greatest fight I have ever watched, since I no longer watch boxing as an adult, well old adult. LOL. I was only 8 years old, but was excited to watch it. Just one of the great memories of being a kid.

That looks like a great microscope, but not usable for me. LOL. I sit on my couch and do my stamping while I watch TV with the wife. If I worked on a desk, I would love to have one like that though.

(2) Do you believe that those who sponsor giveaways do so altruistically? If not, do you see a hidden agenda behind one or some (please do not name specific members)? I don't think anyone is looking to gain something by giving away something on here. I just received some catalogs that were offered for free to anyone that wanted them. They came yesterday and now I have two new catalogs to help me with my new venture on worldwide stamps. The giver was just being generous, nothing else. I myself have offered Ohio Tax stamps to any all who ask, no restrictions applied to this. My intentions were to get other people people interested in Revenue stamps. You could think that maybe I wanted them interested to be able to sell them other stamps I had, right? The only problem is that I gave them one of every stamp I had that I didn't need, so that would leave me none to sell them of course. So, when people on TSF give things away, I don't think there is any reason other than they are just being generous, I know that's why I did it.(3) If you joined TSF on or after January 1, 2017, was your interest in TSF influenced by the efforts of members to distribute stamps gratuitously to other members? I didn't even realize people were giving things away when I joined the stamp forum. I joined to be able to learn from people and share our great interest with each other. I have learned that just logging in every day and reading what has been posted will give you knowledge of something you didn't know about yesterday and maybe make you interested in new areas of stamps. I have learned that there are a lot of fake stamps out there, ask ANY question and you will get more answers than you need, Nova Scotia is expensive to collect, and there are people you have never met, have only had conversations on a forum with, but they will give to your cause so that you may honor your lost friend, just because they can.(4) Do you think the giveaways are beneficial to TSF? Why do they have to be beneficial? Can't they just be fun?(5) Any other comments about the giveaways? Giveaways are just that, they are free stuff, people with big hearts, just want to give away to someone who wants it. Maybe they think in their minds that they are getting rid of stuff they don't want. Maybe they are giving away a certain specialty to interest others in it. Maybe they have received something form someone for free and just want to pay it forward. If the entire world thought this way, wouldn't it be a much better world for it?Members whose collections are too specialized or advanced to benefit from giveaways, any comments would be greatly appreciated even though you do not participate in them.

My Mom's album was a modern Stamp Album also. It was from the early 50's but unfortunately my ex-wife kept my stamp collection. It did have the flags in it though as I remember wondering what they were for? I have a modern stamp album I bought on ebay, but I threw the pages away and used it for something else many years ago. LOL.

Yes he does Chris, I have learned so much since being on TSF in the last few months. I actually look forward to reading what people wrote today, every morning at 4:30 - 5am, before work. I usually read the recent posts or threads from the top bar, just to see what interests me today. This thread has me going back and reading old posts so that I can see what other reference books are out there. I live in Savannah, Ga and we don't have anything for stamps here worth speaking of. I get all my stuff online, so this site is a great help to me. I thank everyone for their help and information i have received here. I have been concentrated on my Ohio tax stamps lately just before I bought 20,000+ of them and it takes time to get through that many. LOL. Hopefully I will be back to my postage stamps soon. Steve has helped me probably more than anyone and even got me buying new stuff. He is always quick to look things up that people ask about, answer questions, or offer his opinion to anyone in need. I have learned this in just a few short months. I had actually bought some Ohio Tax Stamps from him the middle of last year before I even knew about TSF. It is a pleasure to know him as it is you and all the others who regularly post new stuff on here every day. I only wish I had found this site years ago.
Semper Fi! Mike.

What I have found to be my favorite part of this thread is the fact that I learn of Stamp Catalogs that I didn't even know existed. I learned from "tomiseksj" what Mallone's is. This is good for me since we collect First Day Covers. I have seen several other books that I have now added to my want list, or better known as "what I will buy the next day I work overtime list". LOL. Thanks everyone for sharing you libraries so the rest of us can learn more about the books that are available to us. Mike.

For that price, it's certainly worth the try - I've done digital microscope shopping that way, just trying random cheap ones to see what is worth keeping. But you might find that it doesn't resolve fine enough. Half a thousandth of an inch is a bit of a coarse step in terms of paper thickness so you might need a gauge with an extra digit on the display to be accurate enough. And then that extra digit will start driving you crazy as you fight with ink thickness! haha Ryan Well, I always try the bottom and move up. If this is bad, the next one is about $50. LOL. Mike.

I consider the makeup rate more interesting that ugly. Also do not consider the Simpsons as ugly. I group the Simpsons with the Harry Potter and other Super Hero stamps as money grabs. In the past we did not get sheets of characters from "Moby Dick". There are a lot of recent stamps with unattractive designs like Delicioso and some of the Love Stamps. If I never get another "LOVE" stamp on an envelope, I will be happy. I think we all have enough of them in our extras to last a lifetime.

I have Showgard, Prinz, & Scott mounts, all in black. When they are in the books, I can't tell the difference in them myself. They all work good. I usually try to buy seconds because I haven't figured out why they are seconds yet and they are a lot cheaper.

I found this paper Thickness Gage on Ebay for less than $20. It is digital and reads down to .01mm/.0005". I ordered one to test, so I'll let you know how good they work when it gets here in about a month. LOL. Of course for that price it's coming from China.

Well, still on the subject of thin vs thick paper, I asked my smart guy at work how to measure or compare paper thickness. He answered, instantly I may add, that why don't I use my cell phone camera? So, this morning I tried this and sure enough, if you zoom in as far as you phone will go, you can see the side view of a stamp pretty large, depending on how good your phone camera is. Of course, if you only have one stamp, you will still need something to compare to that is the same issue and paper thickness. It may enough to use for most stamp, without ever buying anything. To steady it, lay the phone on a stack of books with the stamps on edge below it. Seems to work pretty good. If you actually take a picture, most phone will automatically enhance the view so it should look even better. This is a cheap and quick way to check thicknesses on a lot of stamps.
If you don't have a smart phone, ask you kids for an old one of theirs, that's what I did to get my smart phone, LOL.

Thanks Bombadil, I had seen those, but, they aren't sold, and I've been warned about taking prices from unsold items (in case the seller has overpriced them). Additionally, the KGvi sheet is not the same as mine. It's similar, but mine has gutters through the horizontal, every fourth row. It would be interesting to know how much difference this makes to its price. Kindly, L. When selling items like this on Ebay, you may only get one bidder on your item. If you price it too low for a start, that's what they will pay. When I have items I am not sure of the value or where I should start it, I will run a 7 day auction at a higher price than I would normally ask. Then if it doesn't sell, I lower the price by about 10% week by week. Eventually it will sell. This is only if your not in a hurry and your willing to pay 25 cents each week until sold. It keeps you from selling your higher priced items too cheap. Of course, if it doesn't sell the first week, you may get an offer from someone through messages to buy it. If you like the price, just list it as a buy it now for them. Good luck.

Well, I have never done any measuring of paper thickness on stamps or otherwise, but I worked for many years in the metal foil business, and I can tell you that there are certainly instruments capable of measuring the thickness of thin sheets of foil, so it would also be possible to use them for paper, whether stamps or something else. A micrometer, which is a screw device, can be used, but is a bit risky as, if it is over-tightened, can damage the foil (or paper), and also give an inaccurate reading, because it is compressing the material while measuring it. In the plant where I worked, we generally used a "drop indicator" which puts the thin sheet between two spherical surfaces, and then displays the distance between the two, showing the thickness of the thin sheet. This sort of technology has existed for many years, although it has been improved, in my opinion, by the more recent addition of digital displays rather than the old dial gauges that we used to use. So yes, these sorts of instruments definitely do exist, and if the relative thicknesses of the papers is known, it should not be that difficult to determine thick versus thin. OK, I can try this. I build Private Jets for a living, so I have all the digital micrometers and such that I could need. I think I should be able take two hard, thin pieces of metal about 1/2" square, measure their combined thickness when stacked and measured, then place the piece of paper between the metal to come up with the paper thickness without crushing or tearing the paper. I actually have a sheet of titanium in my garage that wouldn't bend or deform, but cutting that is another story all together. I guess I have new science project. LOL. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know how it goes if I ever get it done, between work and working at home.

Well, I am glad to see that someone still has their Grandfathers stamp collection. Unfortunately, my X-WIFE took my mothers and Grandfathers stamp collection and never gave them back to me. I started all over about 10 years ago with absoluteley no stamps. But I have done OK, I have a decent collection again.l

Is there any way to tell the 'thin paper' from the regular - without a micrometer? My micrometer doesn't have the resolution to go down to 0.01mm, unfortunately... I have a few of these stamps, and I noticed that a couple of the red 5/- ones are a very slightly different colour than the others - is this just ageing, or is one of them the thin paper? Do I need to get a new, higher-res, micrometer? I saw on the other thread about these stamps that the Very thin paper is 0.085mm, but what is the thickness of the standard ones? L. OK, I have to ask this, is there actually something that will measure the thickness of stamps? I never would have thought of this, since they are so thin. Mike. MODERATOR NOTE: This and the following 10 posts were moved from the thread Rare 1949-1950 Coat-of-Arms Combination.

I thought this rather interesting as this is what my first troop was like, then we got a new troop and we met in the park across the street from scoutmasters house. That was actually fun most weeks. We would have a meeting then play capture the flag int eh woods, maybe a baseball game, changed every week. We just hated the snow in Ohio, that made us stay indoors.

Continuing to sort the Ohio Stamp collection today. I found several errors in the lots today. Several serial number shifts, some without serial numbers and even a fold cut stamp. Just a few more for my special section. I call it a good day "Stampin". Mike.

mikeclevenger , What a remarkable haul! With luck, you'll be able to fill many of your gaps. I'll have my want list to you shortly. Steve, I think you are doing better than me out of my new collection, I have 17 Ohio Tax stamps that you need in your envelope and that was just from yesterday pretty much. I didn't add that many to my collection yesterday and mine were mostly just varieties, not new stamps I needed. I only got about 4 Ohio Tax stamps I was missing. We'll see what today brings.
